The Vase

I felt the need to create. In a different way. To use my hands. To do something tactile. To use a different side of my brain. The side taken up by the photographic life has become slightly analytical and calculated. Like most of you, I know how to walk into a situation and make a picture. I can compose. I can use light. I'm patient and I wait for moments. Sometimes I'm lucky and all 3 come together. Sometimes I'm not, more often than not, and having one of the elements is simply "good enough."

For the last 6 weeks I've been taking a basic throwing wheel pottery class. It was actually really therapeutic at times, and at others it was really frustrating. One week, I threw three pots. Or rather tried to. Things that warped out of my control until they dissolved into nothingness and had to be thrown away. Some nights three hours would go by, with nothing to show for them, except for clay on my pants and covering my arms.

Once I finally learned a different kind of patience, got used to the feel of clay in my hands, and stopped thinking so much about it, the shapes became recognizable. For someone who was raised by an anal-retentive, obsessive-compulsive mom, where perfectionism was key, and nothing else was accepted, it was really nice to be allowed to suck at something. It was incredibly humbling. It's a lesson I've taken with me from the class. One that was worth every penny.

This vase came near the near the very end. It stands no more than 6 inches high. It cost me 6 weeks and $150 for the course. It's the most expensive vase I've ever owned. It was crafted out of love, sweat, tears and by these hands. It is the most valued thing I own.

Alright Already

I'll keep it going. My apologies to all.

Dani ramble

I wish my brain had an off switch.

I can't sleep. I can't help but lay awake, thinking about a story Lane and I have been working on. It's going to be published in 12 days.

It's a tragic story, but ultimately, one about hope. Though, in a meeting last week, Lane's editor summed things up by saying that this is a story about what happens when a child isn't loved. Somehow that resonates.

I want it to be done right.

I wish I was still making pictures of Dani. Still working it. I can't help but wonder if I did enough. If I've told this story fully and to the best of my ability. Wondering if the family will be happy with the results. Hoping it'll do some good, somehow.

My worst fear is that I haven't done it justice.

I'm drawn to stories like this. It's what I'm most passionate about. In a way I'm dealing with my own demons. Trying to reconcile with the past. But it's not about me.

I want it to be perfect. For Dani. After all, it's her story. Not mine.

Anime

I had a lot of fun shooting portraits of all the characters I ran into at MetroCon 2008 -- a celebration of Japanese popular entertainment, including anime (animation), manga (comics), J-pop and J-rock music, cosplay (costume design and performance) and video games. Florida's largest anime convention... right here in Tampa... I love this place.

APAD T-shirts

I'd like to introduce to you, the long-awaited, much-anticipated APAD t-shirts, with a smashing new logo designed by Bill Manley. They are for sale at both Skreened and CafePress stores. The banner reads, "In Image, Truth."

Skreened is printed on a slightly better quality T-shirt (american apparel) and the logo is a little more subdued... it's just an outline of the fist and the t-shirt color as the background, available in 7" and 10" logos.

The CafePress shirt has a little more pop to it.... with the black on white logo design. It can also be printed on anything from a bbq apron to a baby onesie to a mug.

You can order up whatever color combination and sizes you'd like from our two stores below. Get yours for geekfest today!!

Our Skreened store is:

Launching into the Webisphere

I think it's done. Finally. Two years later. Procrastination at its finest. My website has been tweaked, slightly different format, dropped the header, added some new categories, like Travel, which includes the semi-recent trip to Mexico (day of the Dead and Viva San Martin) and some documentary style portraiture. I promise to post the story on Dani when it publishes in early August.

Where is My Mind?

---Stop
With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head will collapse
But there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself
Where is my mind
Ooo ooo ooo
Ooo ooo ooo

A Communal Life

Writer Alexandra Zayas and I teamed up again, this time to tackle a story on an intentional community, otherwise known as a commune, here in Tampa. In the house are 7 adults, 6 children, with 1 more on the way. 5 cats, 2 dogs, 2 hamsters and a box of mealworms. Brian Sanders started this commune as a way to live the word of God. Sanders' practices what he preaches, and lives in an urban area with other like-minded individuals that believe in being an integral part of the community they serve. I love working with Alex because she's always finding quirky little stories and great people within her neighborhood beats -- which makes my job more fun.
